Foreign cooperation between Nový Jičín and its partner cities has a long tradition. As early as 1964, Novellara from Italy became its partner, and in the following years Nový Jičín agreed to cooperate with Görlitz, Ludwigsburg (both in Germany), Świętochłowice (Poland), Kremnica (Slovakia) and Épinal (France).

The beginnings of the cooperation took the informal form of a partnership, gradually confirmed in writing by a partnership agreement. At present, the partnership with the German city of Görlitz is the only one without a contract. Nový Jičín has a permanent interest in expanding foreign cooperation because it is connected with exchange and gaining experience in various fields of interest, breaking down language barriers, exchanging cultural traditions and establishing new friendships.

Foreign relations also include the promotion of Nový Jičín at tourism fairs or the presentation of the town through various media (town websites, information centres, etc.).
