Emblems of the Jesuit Order and the town of Nový Jičín from 1661
Town Hall
Cultural Monument No. 13052 / 8-3332
Sandstone Baroque double cartouche measuring 55 x 80 cm, extension of a portal originally set on the balcony on the first floor of the Town Hall, secondarily walled up at the entrance to the former meeting hall of the Town Hall.
In the heraldic right oval, the arms of the Jesuit order - the majuscule letters IHS with a Latin cross growing out of the central letter's crossbar, three spikes below; on the left, the municipal arms - a clothed frame holding the right half of a draped arrow protrudes from the clouds at the left edge.
On the portal below the cornice inscribed in an oval with a two-line capital inscription:
SIT VIGIL VRBIS AMANS SIT REBVS IN OMNIBVS AEQVVS / CONSILIO VALEAT, QVICUNQVE HAEC LIMINA CALCAT.
The plaque relates to the re-establishment of the town hall in 1661 in house No 1 in the square. The Jesuits, as owners of the New England estate, bought this house from the heirs of Daniel Hofmann and donated it to the town for the location of the town hall. The main entrance to the town hall was via a single staircase to the first floor balcony, which led inside. During the radical remodeling of the Town Hall in 1929-1930, the plaque with the portal was removed and a secondary plaque was placed inside the Town Hall to the entrance of the present ceremonial hall.
