Statue of St. John of Nepomuk
Address: street Nábřežní (in the park by the bridge towards Hřbitovní street), 741 01 Nový Jičín
Cultural monument registry no. 15474/8-2089
This important and impressive statue of St. John of Nepomuk was created in 1758 by Jan Michael Scherhauf and was originally located at the mill in the Lower Suburb (today there is a bridge over the Grasmanka River). The statue probably belonged to a set of sculptures at the Spanish Chapel.
The statue was placed at Jičínka in 1928 and overlooked the bridge and the river. The statue has undergone two restorations. In 1998 it was restored by Ladislav Werkman and in 2009 by academic sculptor and restorer Jakub Gajda, in order to restore the stone material of the monument and also to return to the original layout of the statue. Thus, St. John of Nepomuk is once again looking down on the bridge and the river, thus keeping an eye on his surroundings, as he is, among other things, the patron saint against floods.
